Thanks to everyone for all their support and we look forward to welcoming the Swiss team.
April: Plans falling into place. We still do not have a definite time for the Torch Run. Waterville are joining us for the evening and bringing 2 full buses. The children are hard at work making their torches and flags to line the streets, well done. A lot of hard work went into the art work in the AIB and Brosnan's Pharmacy. Hope all the artists are handing in their work to Martina Viscardi in her Gallery in Bridge St. Feb: Great news for Kenmare, due to the hard work and persistence by Geraldine Foley, (In charge of the Torch Run)Kenmare is being included in the Official Torch Run. This will be a very prestigious occasion. The time is approx. 5-6pm, (to be confirmed) on Wed. 18th June. The runners will start at Faungorth's and run into the Square where there will be an official welcome. There is major celebrations planned for the evening. Waterville and Cahirciveen are not included in the Torch Run and we have invited them to join in our celebrations. (reply not yet received). The Swiss ambassador will also attend. Well done Geraldine, keep up the good work. Kenmare has been choosen to host the Swiss Team attending the Special Olympics in June 2003. This is wonderful news as Kenmare has a special relationship with the Swiss town of Verbier. Two Swiss delegates visited Kenmare on Mon. evening 15th June. The Swiss flag was flying at the Bank of Ireland to welcome them. Mickey Ned brought them on a tour of the sporting facilities. The Park Hotel hosted a drinks reception. The six Verbier students plus local children, under the tutelage of the Healy sisters played a selection of Irish and Swiss tunes. Local dancers, Katie Harrington, Carmel O'Leary, Elaine and Maire Healy-Rae, Hazel Sheehan and Cora Farrell gave us a wonderful display of Irish dancing. The delegates were very impressed with the talent and the welcome they received and returned wondering if their athlethes would want to go to Dublin at all after resting in Kenmare! Lots of volunteers and host families needed. Every little helps. Please contact Frank Mc Gonigle in the Bank of Irl., The Square, Kenmare @ 064-41255. UPDATE Letters have been received from The Swiss Embassy and the embassador is going to visit Kenmare in the near future. We have also received emails from people involved with the team who have viewed kenmare.com website and are very impressed with the area.
