INVASION OF HERITAGE TOWN

If you’ve ever crossed the beautiful Kenmare River via the famous suspension bridge just outside the town of Kenmare, you may have noticed three inscrutable concrete figures at the water’s edge gazing west out to sea.

They’re obviously musicians as they each carry an instrument and like most boybands they’re rather featureless but they are there to remind us of the landing of the Milesians in Kenmare Bay which happened around 1,000 BC and which gave the bay its Irish name, Inbhear Sceine.

This historical invasion will be fully re-enacted and explained in music, song and dance on Sunday 13th July as the opening event of the 2008 Munster Fleadh Cheoil to be held this year in the Kerry heritage town of Kenmare over the weekend of 18th to 20th July.

Starting on the previous Sunday with the ‘Tostal Inbhear Sceine’, a full week of celebrations is planned to encourage us to indulge and revel in our musical heritage. There’ll be concerts, street entertainment, competitions, workshops, ceili bands, guided walks, all much more.

In fact there’ll be something for all ages and all tastes at the Fleadh Cheoil na Mumhan Neidin from 13th to 20th July.

PF MCCARTHY’S LAUNCH ITS OWN PREMIUM LAGER

April see’s the arrival of Kenmare’s first house lager. Paul Walsh of PF’s has joined together with Kinsale Brewing company to produce a premium quality Irish lager. ‘MCCARTHY’S PREMIUM LAGER’ has no artificial ingredients or additives. It is allowed to mature naturally and nothing is done to speed up this process. All this results in a smooth fresh flavoured, crisp tasting, premium beer.

The idea was born by the need for tourists to our town to have the opportunity to taste a local lager, however the customers of PF’s are starting to appreciate this quality lager and it is quickly becoming one of the more popular drinks at PF’s. The plan is to expand this brand and hopefully to roll out Kenmare Lager over the coming year with the view to selling it on the world market. This can only be a good opportunity for Kenmare to spread its name internationally. Who knows, someday there may even be a microbrewery and Kenmare Brewery tourist centre to attract more people to the town.

If you’re a beer fan, call in over the May bank holiday weekend for our BEER & BLUES FESTIVAL. We will be having German beer tasting sessions sponsored by Erdinger between 9pm-10pm Saturday and Sunday followed by the cream of Irish live blues bands. Check the gig guide for full details.
