Kenmare (pop.4170) is situated in the Southwest corner of the
Republic of Ireland, just south of Killarney and the Ring of Kerry, and
north/west of County Cork. The Irish name of the town, Neidin, means little cradle, and
evokes the image of the town's geographical position at the base of Kenmare Bay, nestled
between the Iveragh and Beara Peninsulas. Kenmare has a long and colourful history, and
you can read about it in the history section. We are proud of our town, thanks to the
efforts of our citizens and Kenmare's Tidy Town Committee, Kenmare was awarded "Ireland's
Tidiest Small Town" prize in the National Tidy Towns 96 Competition. and
"Kerry's Tidiest Small Town" in '97.
Kenmare enjoys a well-deserved reputation for fine hotels and restaurants.
In addition to many award-winning restaurants, the latest is the The Vestry 'Best restaurant of the year
1998 of Les Routiers', Kenmare is home to both of Ireland's Michelin rated hotels, The
Park Hotel and the Sheen Falls Lodge.
