KENMARE CARNEGIE HALL

RESTORATION PROJECT

INTRODUCTION

It is proposed that the Carnegie Hall at the rear of the Branch Library be developed into a vibrant arts and Cultural Centre for the people of the town and South Kerry. It is envisaged that the Arts and Cultural Centre would be truly multi-purpose, catering for the broadest possible range of Arts activities. This has been an aspiration for a large number of people in Kenmare for many years now. With the appointment of a Programme Manager, funded by LEADER II, we are confident, now that we have acquired the building from Kerry County Council on lease for a nominal rent on behalf of the people of South Kerry, we can develop the centre effectively making it an invaluable community resource.

AIMS OF THE ARTS CENTRE

The aim of the Arts Centre is to ensure that present and future generations have state of the art facilities, which will allow them access to, and participation in a variety of art forms. The Centre will reflect the diverse interests and arts practices prevalent in the South Kerry area. Some activities envisaged for the centres include: Theatre, Dance, Film, Visual Arts, Lectures, Seminars, Poetry Reading and Literature, Traditional, Classical and Contemporary Music and Concerts. Particular emphasis is being placed on Youth and Educational workshop activities at the Centre as it is recognised that young people need a focus for creative and artistic output. The Arts and Cultural Centre will be there for the people of South Kerry and visitors to the area.

BENEFIT TO LOCALITY

The need for such a Centre is obvious for there is no purpose built Arts Centre in South Kerry. There is, therefore, no venue for touring professional theatre, concerts, dance or exhibitions. Many local traditions, customs are falling into decline and the Centre would offer a focus and give impetus to passing on the art forms to a new generation. Tourist expectations are not being met in relation to entertainment and cultural expression. The Centre would be an incentive to visit the area outside of the relatively short tourist season. Local education representatives have identified the Centre as a necessary resource if they are to achieve the aims put forward for the new curriculum. The Centre will provide a much needed educational /social outlet for the young people of the area.

MANAGEMENT OF ARTS CENTRE

There will be a Board of Management, which will run the company on a non-profit basis limited by guarantee. This means that any profits made will be reinvested in the Centre for the benefit of the local community. The Board will appoint a manager to run the Centre. This person's job will be to make the Centre a sustainable artistic enterprise.

COST OF CENTRE

Considerable European (LEADER II), National and County funding is available on the basis that a substantial local financial contribution is forthcoming. It is estimated that IR£375,000 will cover the cost of converting and fitting out the building as a superb Arts and Cultural Centre for the people of Kenmare and District. We must all contribute to make this unique project a reality. Your contribution can be paid to 'Kenmare Carnegie Arts Centre' at A.I.B. Main Street, Kenmare (Account Number 18032262) or direct contact can be made with any of the Board Members listed below.
