FISHING ON THE NORTH SHORE RING OF KERRY
Lamb’s Head This is on a spectacular piece of coastline. Pollack, Conger, Wrasse and Mackerel. Bass arriving inshore around here in the early Autumn. Fly fishing for Pollack, Wrasse and even Triggerfish in the summer.
Derrynane A beach, tucked into a bay protected by Lamb’s Head and Hog’s Head. This beach is accessed from the village and most of the way by road. It fishes best on the flood and near dusk. Bass and Flounder are the main quarry taken here, with Mullet in the estuary.
Gleesk Harbour Facing due south, even south east, these marks offer good fishing out of any cold northern winds. Limited parking at the pier itself, but that said, it is a lovely spot. Wrasse, Triggerfish and Pollack falling to float fished worms, Pollack and Mackerel taken on spinners, and finally Dogfish, Conger and an odd Ray.
Oysterbed Pier, Sneem A small pier, access is on the shore road. Pier fishing for Conger on the bottom, Wrasse on a float, Mullet on both, and the chance of an odd Ray and Flatfish.
Blackwater Harbour You can fish from both the harbour itself and the rocks to the west of the harbour. Spinning will take Mackerel in season, small Pollack, and there is even the possibilility of a Sea-Trout. Ray and smaller Conger have both been caught here with bottom fished rigs.
FISHING ON THE SOUTH SHORE RING OF BEARA
Bunan, Coast road, the R571 west of Lauragh. There is parking at the point itself. Wrasse, Conger, Bull Huss, Mackerel and Pollack are the listed species, to which might be added Coalfish, Launce and other smaller species.
Bird Point to Dog’s Rock Take the country road due north from Ardgroom, over the lagoon. Wrasse, Conger, Bull Huss, Mackerel and Pollack are the listed species, to which might be added Coalfish, Launce and other smaller species.
Carrig Fada to Oileanin The best road access is on the R575 west from Eyeries towards Ahilies, if you find yourself turning due south, you have gone too far. There is a smaller side road leading north west that will bring you all the way to Carrig Fada. Wrasse, Conger, Bull Huss, Mackerel and Pollack are the listed species.
Ballydonegan Just past the village of Ahillies, this effectively holds two marks, from the beach and from the little pier. Offers standard Flatfish and some Bass with the best position being at the mouth of the small stream. The pier offers access to deeper water on the flooding tide and adds Dogfish to the list.
Dursey Sound You can not visit Dursey Sound without taking the cablecar ride out to Dursey Island. The sound fishes extremely well at all stages of the tide, Pollack and Mackerel, Wrasse fishing just north east of the cable car station - bring worm baits !!
