Shelburne Lodge (c. mid-18th century) was the original house in the Kenmare area of the Petty - Fitzmaurice family William Petty Fitzmaurice (1737-1805) known as Lord Shelburne, commissioned the design of the town of Kenmare which was completed in 1775. Lord Shelburne was Prime Minister of Great Britain from July 1782 to February 1783 and helped negotiate the Treaty of Paris 1783 which brought the conflict between Britain and America to an end.
Shelburne Lodge is a lovely Georgian farmhouse set in a large garden with lawns, a herb garden, an orchard and its own lawn tennis court. It opened for guests in September 1995 and is already listed in many guides and approved as guesthouse by ITB/Bord Failte. For the discerning visitor it offers rooms individually furnished with antiques and polished old wooden floors. Each bedroom has a direct dial telephone, a small colour television, and an en-suite bathroom. In the evening, guests may relax by the open log fire in the drawing-room.
Kenmare town centre is just five minutes walk. The waterside 18-hole golf course lies adjacent to Shelburne Lodge. Available locally are numerous outdoor activities such as salmon, trout and sea fishing, horse riding, water sports, and sea-trips. The area is a renowned centre for walking and cycling (bicycles can be hired locally). The local hill walking club organises two walking festivals annually. For the motorist, Kenmare is ideally placed for touring Kerry's peninsulas via Ring of Kerry, Ring of Beara and Dingle peninsula. Historic houses and gardens are within comfortable driving distance - these include Muckross, Bantry,Derrynane House (Home of the great Daniel 0' Connell,) Dirreen, and Garnish Island. If you wish to tour we will gladly help you with your itinerary.
Numerous guides have rated Kenmare hotels, guesthouses and restaurants among the best in the country. Each evening there is good food and a lively informal atmosphere in our small restaurant Packies in Henry Street (reservations are advisable). The Purple Heather bar bistro, also in Henry Street, has been in our family since 1960. This is a great venue for food, drink and excellent seafood, snacks, home-made soups, patés and cakes. There are many pubs in Kenmare to suit all tastes with music and entertainment.
